How the clock works
Each session is one city's business hours, Monday to Friday in that city: Sydney 07:00 to 16:00, Tokyo 09:00 to 18:00, London 08:00 to 17:00 and New York 08:00 to 17:00. Sessions are conventions rather than official hours, and these are the ones our forex market hours guide uses. The forex market itself runs from 17:00 on Sunday to 17:00 on Friday, New York time, which is 22:00 UK in most weeks, so on a Sunday evening Sydney's Monday can begin before the first prices.
Gold keeps a shorter week on the same New York clock: Sunday 18:00 to Friday 17:00, with a break from 17:00 to 18:00 every day, 22:00 to 23:00 UK in most weeks. Gold market hours sets out those times for other cities.
When the clocks change
The UK puts its clocks back on 25 October 2026 and the US on 1 November 2026. From 25 to 31 October, New York is four hours behind London instead of five, so everything New York sets reaches a UK trader an hour early: the forex open at 21:00 on Sunday, the overlap from 12:00, gold's break from 21:00. It happens again from 14 to 27 March 2027. Sydney changes its own clocks on 4 October 2026 and 4 April 2027. The clock reads each city's rules in your browser, so none of this needs adjusting by hand.
Open is not the same as busy
In our market data, measured from one-minute prices from 26 March to 25 September 2026, EUR/USD's busiest hours by median range were 13:00 to 16:00 UK, with the 15:00 hour largest at 15.2 pips over 132 weekdays. Gold's were 14:00 to 16:00 and 02:00 to 03:00 UK, with the 14:00 hour largest at 278 pips, about $28. Of the four sessions, London had the largest median range on both: 38.0 pips on EUR/USD and 608 pips on gold. The EUR/USD and gold pages have every hour, and when each major pair moves sets the pairs side by side, hour by hour.
What the clock leaves out
Public holidays. Around Christmas, New Year and the US holidays, brokers shorten or close sessions and publish their own hours in advance, and those days are not on this clock. Your platform also keeps its own time: MT5 shows the broker's server time, so compare it with this page once, and again after each clock change.
