How the gold pip is counted here
One pip on gold is a $0.10 move in the price, the convention of our signals, our results page and every calculator on this site. A move from 2410.50 to 2410.60 is one pip, and a move from 2410.50 to 2411.50, one dollar, is ten pips. A standard lot is 100 ounces, so one pip on 1.00 lot is 100 × $0.10 = $10, and the pip value moves with the lot: $1 on 0.10 lots and $0.10 on 0.01 lots.
The calculator does the same sum for any account currency. Gold is priced in US dollars, so for a pound, euro or other account it converts the dollar figure at the day’s reference rate and shows the rate it used, or takes a rate you type from your platform.
Quick answers for a US dollar account
| Lot size | 1 pip | 10 pips | 100 pips | 500 pips | $1 move | $10 move |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.01 lots | $0.10 | $1 | $10 | $50 | $1 | $10 |
| 0.10 lots | $1 | $10 | $100 | $500 | $10 | $100 |
| 1.00 lot | $10 | $100 | $1,000 | $5,000 | $100 | $1,000 |
A $1 move in the gold price is 10 pips and a $10 move is 100 pips, so the last two columns match the 10 and 100 pip columns. On 0.01 lots, which is 1 ounce, every dollar the price moves is a dollar of profit or loss.
Other ways people count a gold pip
Gold has no single official pip, and the conventions differ by a factor of ten. Some channels and brokers call $0.01 a pip, so their “100 pip” move is $1.00 of price, which is 10 pips here. MetaTrader 5 shows points, the last decimal of the quote: on a gold symbol quoted to two decimals a point is $0.01, so one pip of $0.10 is 10 points. A few traders count whole dollars. Before you size from anyone’s pip figures, measure one of their signals on the chart: the distance in dollars of price tells you which convention they use.
| Convention | Who counts this way | The same $5.00 move |
|---|---|---|
| $0.10 is one pip | Our signals, results page and calculators | 50 pips |
| $0.01 is one pip | Some channels and brokers | 500 pips |
| MT5 points, quote with two decimals | MetaTrader, which counts the last decimal of the price | 500 points |
| $1.00 is one pip | Some traders, counting whole dollars | 5 pips |
From pips to a lot size
A pip value on its own does not tell you how big to trade. The gold lot size calculator turns a gold signal’s entry and stop into a lot size from your balance and the risk you choose, and how much a gold pip is worth works through the conventions with examples. Check your broker’s contract once: in MT5, right-click the gold symbol in Market Watch and choose Specification. 100 ounces per lot is the common contract, but some brokers and account types use another size.
